UVa Sports (Non)Marketing Strikes Again!

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Al GrohKris notices the latest fumble*:

I could be wrong with this opinion, but I was shocked that Coach Groh didn’t make the big-time radio rounds last week or so far this week. This country is obsessed with football and the NFL. Al coached in the league. I would think two potential top 10 NFL Draft Picks (top 15 when it was all said and done) would be an excuse to make some appearances on some national level shows. Jim Rome. Tony Bruno. Dan Patrick. Anywhere.

I could be wrong and if I am, someone please set me straight – maybe Coach Groh did make some radio appearances and the news didn’t make it to the message boards, but that seems unlikely since Chris Long’s media tour last week got a virtual play by play from the Sabre-ites out there. Someone in the athletics department should have been in “public relations, sell the program nationally this week while we can” mode, making phone calls, shooting emails, and telling Coach who he was talking to next. Seems like a lost opportunity to me.

If this is true, this might have been the biggest missed opportunity in Virginia football since that, well … heck, take your pick. There was probably some huge missed marketing opportunity last week too. And the week before that. Honestly, I don’t know if they could be worse at this if they tried.

Speaking of which, let me take this perfect opportunity to introduce a new category to warehouse all the brilliant moves and non-moves by UVa, the ACC, and whoever else: $3.50 Tap Water. You know, the mother of all bad decisions.

Quote of the day

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

“Everybody talks about the high motor, but I think it’s overplayed…. You disrespect him by saying he’s an overachiever. He’s a high achiever, with freakish athletic skills.” – NFL Network analyst Mike Maycock, on Chris Long.

The rest of the seniors

You know about Long and Albert. You probably know about Santi too. Here’s where those non-drafted Hoos ended up in free agency land:

Nate Lyles to the Jets
Jermain Dias to the Browns
Chris Gould to the Bucs
Jon Stupar to the Pats

Football delusions

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Look, I’m a homer enough to want to believe that Virginia could be a top 25 team next year. And if only we could go back in a time, we’d take the Gator Bowl. But I’ll need a few more beers to buy any Virginia-in-the-top-25 talk until after our new starting quarterback Pete Lalich shows some skills, for starters.

Now how much you wanna bet I can throw a football over them mountains?

Baseball swooning

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I hear ya, P-Hite. Getting swept by Miami really exposed Virginia’s baseball team. Here’s hoping that whole playing-on-the-road theory holds up in the key May home match-ups against Georgia Tech and UNC, or we can start the process of sadly writing this season off.

A bit of sympathy for Albert

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I know that sympathy is the last thing that a new multi-millionaire with a dream job should get, but I do feel a little bad for Braden Albert. I figured that, regardless of where he went in the first round, he’d be the top dog for that pro team when it came to all the media attention and such. But, by going to the Chiefs at #15 as their second pick, he is getting “second fiddle” coverage to Glen Dorsey. Watching Dorsey get the lion’s share of the NFL channel’s recap of the Chiefs’ press conference was a bit annoying. Understandable, but annoying. I’m sure Branden doesn’t care, but I couldn’t help wishing he was the only one in the spotlight up there. He certainly deserves it.

Chris Long, please pick up the courtesy phone

Chris Long almost not the second pick

Monday, April 28th, 2008

How close was Chris Long to becoming the first pick? This close.

And after the second pick? This close.
