Barker arrested

Monday, July 28th, 2008

And for stealing beer from a cooler at Club 216. In case you were wondering what Virginia’s starting right tackle was up to this summer.

Wasn’t I just talking about our student athletes not doing blatantly illegal stuff? Fer cryin’ out loud.

More thoughts in a bit….

Remembering Skip

Monday, July 28th, 2008

OG&B posts a tribute to Prosser a year after his untimely death.

One of the most amazing things about Skip was that his presence was not felt only at Wake Forest. He had a positive effect on every campus, every coach, every player, every media member, and every person who spent considerable time with him.

Though time may have dulled the pain for many of us, an anniversary like this is never easy. Many tough memories return, and many happy ones seem to hurt, too.

Say goodbye to SMQ as we’ve known it

Monday, July 28th, 2008

The media overlords are about to absorb him. Lucky bastard.

Courtesy of Dear Old UVa, Somdev has been tearing through higher ranked players at the Lexington Challenger (see here and here).

A coach resigns

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Virginia’s track & field director/cross country coach has stepped down. These programs have seen steady progress in the past decade, though I’m a little eager to see some of Craig Littlepage’s non-revenue coach hiring magic.

Two preseason All-ACC

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Sintim and Monroe get a little preseason love.

A side note: isn’t a little silly to have a “preseason player of the year”? Just strikes me as odd to have a player of a year that hasn’t happened yet. Why not give Clemson a preseason ACC championship too?

Bobby Brown (not pictured)

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Bobby BrownThe Kings sign point guard (and “summer league sensation”) Bobby Brown to a two-year contract. You know, it’s their prerogative, but I’d hope they wouldn’t be so cruel to Sean. It’s not good news for Singletary’s prospects — Brown has been too hot to handle, too cold to hold, he’s really been in control through all of summer league. Sean needs to cool it now and get his shooting percentage back under control. But every little step he takes will bring him closer to landing a spot on an NBA team.

Read more about the new edition for the Kings here. Discussion (and more bad puns) on the basketball board.*

Redshirting v. burning

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Grobe v. Bowden. One thing that should be noted, though, is that both coaches have entirely different expectations on them. So Tommy may feel a wee bit more pressure to get talented freshmen on the field, while Jimmy has a much more patient fan base.

Chris Long, the numbers and the position

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Finally getting some details on Long’s professional future:

Long’s contract covers six years — the final year is a club option — and is worth $56.5 million. Of that total, $29 million is guaranteed.

And $29 million will go a long way in St. Louis, believe me. I hear that Ozzie Smith’s baseball glove shaped pool might be for sale again?

Also, this:

Long will line up with the first team Friday at the opening practice; he already has been designated the starter at right end. Still, Long knows that he isn’t guaranteed that job, no matter his draft status or how much he’s being paid.

So, he’s joining Branden as starting right out the gate. Of course, this is just the training camp designations: a lot could change between now and the first week.

Oh, and as long as Chris is paying back old debts, I should remind him that my bill for being his Chief Blogger Propagandist is past due. I hope that six figure check for my blogosphere consulting is in the mail.

Quote of the day

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

“Now it’s time to play football.” Branden Albert, after signing a five-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.
