The Afternoon Break – 5/3/2012
May 3rd, 2012 by Kris
Emily Fraser (women’s tennis) and Steele Stanwick (men’s lacrosse) were honored as Virginia’s top female and male athletes for the 2011-12 academic year at UVa’s annual awards dinner on May 2 at John Paul Jones Arena, according to this news release.
Stanwick will have to make room on a crowded awards shelf. He was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 2012 after being named the ACC POY in 2011 (the award was split for offense and defense for the first time this season). He’s the first Cavalier to receive two ACC Player of the Year honors. Earlier in his career, Stanwick received the Tewaaraton Trophy (top male collegiate lacrosse player) and was named ACC Rookie of the Year (2009). He is a finalist for this year’s Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for men’s lacrosse too (vote for Steele Stanwick here).
Stanwick is UVa’s all-time points leader with 260 points so far in his career.
Fraser has posted a record of 12-5 in No. 1 singles competition in dual match play this season. She is ranked No. 21 nationally and earlier this season was ranked as high as No. 15, the highest ranking for a UVa women’s tennis player in 17 years. She earned All-ACC honors for the second time in her career. Fraser owns a career singles record of 102-54.
