Week In Review: Cutler Shines In 2012 Debut
August 28th, 2012 by Chris HorneThe “Week In Review” will be a weekly feature throughout the 2012 regular season and into the playoffs. It’s a look at how UVa’s recruits performed on the gridiron in the past week. Zach Bradshaw (LB/WR), Hipolito Corporan (CB), Jack English (DT/TE), Tim Harris (CB), Brad Henson Jr. (OL), Jack McDonald (OL) and Sadiq Olanrewaju (OL) have yet to play a regular season game. The rest of UVa’s class of 2013 took the field last week, and here is how they fared…
- Malcolm Cook, S/ATH, Fork Union Military Academy (VA)
FUMA (0-1) was outmatched against Hermitage in the ESPN High School Kickoff, dropping a 38-0 decision to the Panthers. The 6’1″, 190-pound Cook played safety.
- Corwin “Turtle” Cutler, QB, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA)
The 6’3″ Cutler and the rest of the Dolphins offense rolled in last week’s season opener, crushing Tallwood by a score of 60-0. Turtle completed 13 of 18 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns.
- Kirk Garner, CB/WR, Andre Levrone Jr., WR, Brendan Marshall, QB, Good Counsel (Olney, MD)
The Falcons opened the 2012 season with a 27-22 loss to Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) in the ESPN High School Kickoff.
The 6’5″ Marshall started off hot, going 6-6 while guiding Good Counsel to a score on its opening drive. The Falcons took an 8-7 lead following a 2-point conversion. Bishop Gorman took control from then on, scoring 20 straight. A late Good Counsel rally fell short.
Marshall finished with 16 completions in 27 attempts for 182 yards and one interception. He added 10 yards rushing on six carries. Garner, who will play cornerback at Virginia, contributed five catches for 60 yards as one of Marshall’s primary receiving targets.
Levrone Jr. dropped the first pass thrown his way. The 6’2″, 190-pound senior did not have a catch on the night.
The Falcons look to rebound this Friday night when they take on Gilman, which features another Virginia-bound prospect in linebacker Micah Kiser.
- Keeon Johnson, WR, A.L. Brown (Kannapolis, N.C.)
Brown enjoyed a 62-6 blowout win over South Rowan. Johnson, a wide receiver, had a 53-yard touchdown pass in the win, which gives Brown a 2-0 record in 2012.
- Zack Jones, WR, Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA)
The defending Group AAA, Division 6 champion Tigers had a tough start to the 2012 season, falling to a sharp Byrnes (S.C.) team by a score of 35-14. Jones, who battled cramps for a good part of the game, had two catches for 92 yards.
- Micah Kiser, LB, Gilman (Baltimore, MD)
Gilman tried to rally but couldn’t overcome a 28-0 halftime score, ultimately falling to highly regarded Moeller (OH), 35-14. Kiser looked good, finishing with 9.5 tackles and a forced fumble for the Greyhounds (0-1). The UVa-bound linebacker has a good feel for the game, and he is a strong tackler.
- Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell, RB, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA)
The Marlins defeated First Colonial, 28-3, in their season opener last week. Smoke finished with 21 carries for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Beach District rival Salem, which features Virginia Tech-bound signal caller Bucky Hodges, awaits the Marlins on Friday night.
- LaChaston Smith, LB, South Iredell (Statesville, N.C.)
Smith missed the final few games of last season with a foot injury. The injury bug has bitten the promising athlete once again this year, as he is out for at least six games after suffering a broken fibula in South Iredell’s (1-1) season opener. Playing without its star in last week’s contest against rival Statesville, South Iredell lost 30-20.
- Donta Wilkins, DT/OL, Potomac (Dumfries, VA)
Potomac defeated Stafford 28-10 in its season opener last week.
