Numbers-wise there wasn’t a huge turnout of recruits, but there certainly was some talent on hand to watch UVa take on Louisiana Tech. First, here are the UVa commitments we confirmed to be in attendance:
- Damascus (MD) LB/H-Back Zach Bradshaw
- Varina (VA) CB Tim Harris
- Monsignor Donovan (Toms River, N.J.) OL Brad Henson
- Good Counsel (Olney, MD) WR Andre Levrone, Jr.
- Good Counsel (Olney, MD) QB Brendan “Whitey” Marshall
On the uncommitted front, Olympia (Orlando, FL) senior offensive tackle Shawn Curtis did make it to Charlottesville and is currently on an official visit. He is expected to leave tomorrow morning. This is the first official for the 6’5″, 275-pound prospect, who has also scheduled trips to Syracuse (Oct. 19-21), Iowa State (Oct. 26-28), and Wake Forest (Nov. 2-4). Curtis is also considering Duke, Mississippi State, and South Florida.
EDGE subscribers can read more on Curtis in this article posted earlier in the week.
Two other senior offensive linemen, Hylton (Woodbridge, VA) tackle Chasz Wright and Manchester (Midlothian, VA) guard Darius Garcia, were in Scott Stadium as well. Garcia is still seeking his first FBS level offer, while the 6’7″, 275-pound Wright holds offers from Connecticut, N.C. State and Penn State,
H.D. Woodson (Washington, D.C.) cornerback D’Andre Payne, one of the most coveted defensive backs in the class of 2014, was in Scott Stadium as well. The 5’9″, 170-pound Payne has been verbally offered by major programs all across the country, including those is in the ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and SEC. UVa is one of the ACC programs that has offered.

University of Virginia-bound quarterback leads a talented Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) squad into tonight’s contest against Beach District rival Salem. Both teams enter the game undefeated, with the Dolphins 5-0 and the Sun Devils 4-0.
Cutler, a 6’3″, 190-pound senior, has been terrific so far this year. He has thrown for 1,095 yards and 14 touchdowns, and through five games he has yet to throw an interception. The last two games combined, Cutler has completed 25 of 34 passes for 473 yards and six scores.
“This year, he is a little bit more confident because he has more command of our offense,” Dolphins head coach Chris Scott said of Cutler, who threw for 1,703 yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior last season, which was his first at Ocean Lakes. “He has a real rhythm because the mental aspect is better this year. Last week, we had two receivers with over 100 yards receiving. He is throwing the ball all over the field.
“Turtle’s biggest asset is he can throw the ball so well. He has such a strong arm. He can beat great coverage. He also has great athletic ability in the pocket, but he’s not a guy that’s going to do quarterback power runs… that’s not his game.”
Tonight’s game features a handful of major Division 1 prospects. A pair of Dolphins defensive tackles — senior Demitri McGill and junior Derrick Nnadi — boast major FBS offers (Nnadi has an offer from UVa). And Ocean Lakes sophomore athlete Jaason Lewis has received verbal offers from ODU, UNC, UVa and Virginia Tech. On Salem’s side, the Sun Devils boast a pair of Virginia Tech-bound prospects in quarterback Bucky Hodges and linebacker Andrew Motu-apuaka. Wide receiver Kwamane Bowens has major FBS offers as well.

Boone (Orlando, FL) senior power forward/center Schuyler Rimmer was offered a scholarship by the University of Virginia two months ago, around July 20. Just a few weeks later, he verbally committed to the University of Florida. The 6’9″, 230-pound Rimmer has now reopened his recruitment, and UVa is one of four finalists he is considering.
Via text message, Rimmer has confirmed to TheSabre.com that he is down to Southern Cal, Stanford, Vanderbilt and Virginia. He took an official visit to USC last weekend. Rimmer heads to Stanford the weekend of October 5-7, and officials to UVa (October 25-27) and Vanderbilt (November 2-4) are scheduled as well.
On Twitter, Rimmer wrote the following after the trip to Southern Cal: “#USC was great. I had an awesome time. #LosAngeles is a great place to be.”
Rimmer participated at Tony Bennett’s Elite Camp in late June, but an injury on day one (at the beginning of 5-on-5 competition) sidelined him for the rest of the camp. Coach Bennett and company watched him on the AAU circuit in July and decided to offer.
“First of all, Schuyler’s a great person,” Boone head coach Greg Shirley told TheSabre.com in an EDGE article on July 18. “As talented as he is on the floor, he’s an even better person and student than he is a player. Basketball-wise, he is one of the more talented big men to come through the area. He has started since his freshman year. He hits from 15 to 18 feet consistently. The better the competition, the better he plays. He’s a very smart young man on the floor. He picks up whatever we throw at him basketball-wise. That will help him be able to step in right away in college.”
Virginia, which has secured two backcourt commitments (Devon Hall and London Perrantes) so far in this class, is in the market for a low post prospect. In addition to Rimmer, the Cavaliers are in the running for Briarcrest Christian (Eads, TN) power forward Austin Nichols, who earlier this month took an official to UVa. Nichols is also considering Auburn, Duke, Memphis, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. UVa has also offered 7’0″ center Joel Embiid, a product of the Rock School in Gainesville, FL.

The “Week In Review” will be a weekly feature throughout the 2012 regular season and into the playoffs. It’s a look at how UVa’s recruits performed on the gridiron in the past week. With the exceptions of cornerback Tim Harris and linebacker Micah Kiser, every one of UVa’s recruits (class of 2013 as well as Chris Nelson, a class of 2014 recruit) were victorious this past week.
- Zach Bradshaw, LB/WR, Damascus (MD)
Damascus recorded shutout no. 2 of the 2012 season, this time blanking Einstein 35-0. The Hornets (4-0) have allowed only 14 points all year.
- Malcolm Cook, S/ATH, Fork Union Military Academy (VA)
Fork Union defeated defending state champ Christchurch, 21-7, to move to 4-1 this season.
- Hipolito Corporan, CB, Westside (Houston, TX)
Westside has evened its record at 2-2 after beating Kempner, 48-21, last Friday night.
- Corwin “Turtle” Cutler, QB, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA)
Ocean Lakes scored its fifth victory in as many games, this time defeating First Colonial 50-14. Cutler completed 15 of 23 passes for 250 yards and three scores. He threw no interceptions. This performance comes off a previous week’s output in which he completed 10 of 11 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns.
- Jack English DT/TE, St. Christopher’s (Richmond, VA)
St. Christopher’s rolled to a 40-14 win over Norfolk Academy and is now 3-1 on the year.
- Kirk Garner, CB/WR, Andre Levrone Jr., WR, Brendan Marshall, QB, Good Counsel (Olney, MD)
Fueled by 38 first-half points, Good Counsel rolled to a 45-24 win over Gonzaga this past Saturday. After Gonzaga tied the game at 7-7, Garner returned the ensuing kick-off 81 yards for a touchdown. The Falcons would score 31 straight points before a Gonzaga field goal made for a 38-10 halftime score.
Marshall had a quiet night, completing only 4-of-8 passes for 23 yards and an interception. He added 25 yards rushing on three carries. Clemson-bound running back/linebacker Dorian O’Daniel was the story, as he rushed 24 times for 336 yards and four scores.
Garner added one catch for seven yards.
Levrone Jr. remains sidelined while recovering from a broken left tibia suffered in the season opener.
- Tim Harris, CB, Varina (VA)
Varina went toe-to-toe with fellow Central Region power Hermitage before losing in overtime, 20-17. Harris, who primarily plays defense, had three receptions for 19 yards in a losing effort. The Blue Devils fall to 2-1.
- Brad Henson Jr., OL, Monsignor Donovan (Toms River, N.J.)
Monsignor Donovan held on to beat Barnegat, 24-21. Henson and the rest of the offensive line paved the way for three long touchdown runs (47, 52, 72) that gave Donovan (2-1) a 21-7 halftime lead.
- Keeon Johnson, WR, A.L. Brown (Kannapolis, N.C.)
Johnson missed his second straight game with a toe injury, but Brown still handled Central Cabarrus in a 39-7 win. Brown is 2-0 in its conference, 5-1 overall.
- Zack Jones, WR, Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA)
Jones had two receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown in Oscar Smith’s 49-0 win over Nansemond River. The Tigers are now 3-1 this season. Jones, whose touchdown catch covered 53 yards, now has four scores on the season.
- Micah Kiser, LB, Gilman (Baltimore, MD)
Gilman (2-2) was idle. The Greyhounds take to the field again this Saturday, against Mount St. Joseph.
- Jack McDonald, OL, Boston College High (Boston, MA)
BC High put one in the win column, defeating Dartmouth 31-0. The Eagles are 1-2.
- Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell, RB, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA)
An up-and-down season for Bayside was up again this past week, when the Marlins soundly defeated Kempsville by a score of 53-6. Mizzell came through big, rushing 15 times for 109 yards and four touchdowns. He added an 83-yard punt return for another score.
Bayside improves to 3-2 on the season. Mizzell has excelled in all three wins, but the opposition has kept him in check in both losses.
- Sadiq Olanrewaju, OL, Salisbury School (CT)
Salisbury won its 2012 season opener, defeating Hotchkiss 10-6.
- LaChaston Smith, LB, South Iredell (Statesville, N.C.)
Smith hopes to be able to return soon after suffering a broken fibula in South Iredell’s season opener. His team defeated Bunker Hill, 51-7, this past week to move to 5-1.
- Donta Wilkins, DT/OL, Potomac (Dumfries, VA)
Potomac ended its 2-game losing skid with a 32-0 defeat of Freedom-Woodbridge. Wilkins and company are 2-2 in 2012.
- Chris Nelson, DT, Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL), Class of 2014 recruit
VCA has finally put one in the victory column, defeating Mount Dora Bible by a score of 32-18. The Storm is now 1-3 on the year.

The “Week In Review” will be a weekly feature throughout the 2012 regular season and into the playoffs. It’s a look at how UVa’s recruits performed on the gridiron in the past week. Sadiq Olanrewaju, an offensive tackle out of Salisbury School (Salisbury, CT), still has yet to play a regular season game. That will change this week, though, when Salisbury takes on Hotchkiss in its 2012 season opener.
The premier game, both in Beach District play as well as where Virginia football recruiting is concerned, was Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) versus Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA). Ocean Lakes dominated, racking up 45 points (all in the first three quarters) while blanking a typically potent Marlins offense. As you’ll read below, Dolphins quarterback Corwin “Turtle” Cutler turned in his best performance of the season.
- Zach Bradshaw, LB/WR, Damascus (MD)
Three regular season games, three straight impressive wins for Damascus. The Hornets have outscored their opponents 113-14 this season, including a 37-8 win over Wootton this past week.
- Malcolm Cook, S/ATH, Fork Union Military Academy (VA)
FUMA is 3-1 on the year after defeating Powhatan, 41-20. Coach Micky Sullivan’s group has come back nicely after a big season opening loss to Hermitage.
- Hipolito Corporan, CB, Westside (Houston, TX)
Westside falls to 1-2 after losing to Port Arthur Memorial by a score of 31-16. The Wolves will look to snap a 2-game losing streak this Friday, when they travel to Kempner.
- Corwin “Turtle” Cutler, QB, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA)
The 6’3″, 190-pound signal caller was outstanding in the Dolphins’ (4-0) big victory, completing 10 of 11 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns (18, 1, 21).
- Jack English DT/TE, St. Christopher’s (Richmond, VA)
After being dealt its first loss of the season the previous week, St. Christopher’s trampled St. Anne’s-Belfield by a score of 35-10. The Saints improve to 2-1 on the season.
EDGE subscribers should be sure to check out last Friday’s “Recruiting News & Notes” feature, which includes info on English and sophomore Ricky DeBerry, Jr. DeBerry, who came up big against St. Anne’s with 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks, recently was verbally offered by UVa.
- Kirk Garner, CB/WR, Andre Levrone Jr., WR, Brendan Marshall, QB, Good Counsel (Olney, MD)
Good Counsel destroyed H.D. Woodson last week by a score of 49-0, improving its record to 3-1. WCAC-rival Gonzaga awaits this Saturday.
Marshall, a 6’5″, 200-pound signal caller, completed six of his eight passes for 127 yards and one touchdown. Garner had only one catches for seven yards, but he ran in a 2-point conversion and also helped the Falcons defense record its first shutout of the season.
Levrone Jr. remains sidelined while recovering from a broken left tibia suffered in the season opener.
- Tim Harris, CB, Varina (VA)
In a contest between two of the Central Region’s most talented teams, Varina crushed Thomas Dale 37-8. The Blue Devils’ defense, which features Harris, a top cornerback recruit, has surrendered only 15 points in two games (both wins) this season.
- Brad Henson Jr., OL, Monsignor Donovan (Toms River, N.J.)
Monsignor Donovan had a field goal, a safety, and a touchdown in the second half to defeat Lakewood, 18-14. Donovan (1-1) trailed 14-7 at halftime.
- Keeon Johnson, WR, A.L. Brown (Kannapolis, N.C.)
A.L. Brown dominated Robinson, 69-21, to move to 4-1 on the season. Johnson did not play due to a toe injury, but Brown coach Mike Newsome told the Independent Tribune that the injury is not considered serious. The talented wideout may have to miss another game, though.
- Zack Jones, WR, Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA)
Zack Jones had a touchdown catch of 40 yards as Oscar Smith (2-1) rolled over Indian River, 42-6. All three of Jones’ touchdowns have come in the last two games, with the 40-yard effort being the shortest of the three. He had TD catches of 55 and 76 yards the previous week.
- Micah Kiser, LB, Gilman (Baltimore, MD)
Gilman evened its record at 2-2 after crushing Charlotte Christian, 37-14.
- Jack McDonald, OL, Boston College High (Boston, MA)
BC High dropped to 0-2 after dropping a 27-7 decision to North Attleboro. The struggling Eagles have yet to score an offensive touchdown this season.
- Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell, RB, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA)
The Marlins’ running game was bottled up by Ocean Lakes, as Mizzell and company finished with only 47 yards on 27 attempts. Bayside, which falls to 2-2 on the season, will try to rebound this Friday against Kempsville.
- LaChaston Smith, LB, South Iredell (Statesville, N.C.)
Smith hopes to be able to return just after midseason after suffering a broken fibula in South Iredell’s season opener. His coach updated his status — physically and academically, as Smith hopes to enroll early at UVa – in an EDGE article last week.
- Donta Wilkins, DT/OL, Potomac (Dumfries, VA)
Potomac has now lost two straight after falling to Battlefield this past week, 33-14. Wilkins and company are now 1-2 on the season.
- Chris Nelson, DT, Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL), Class of 2014 recruit
VCA is now 0-3 in 2012 after falling to Florida Air Academy, 48-20.

- The running game and offensive line have drawn a lot of questions this week over lack of production. Is this “needing time to gel” or is time to shuffle things in the interior?
- Michael Rocco, who was pulled last week, is still the starter according to coach Mike London, but he still wants to find time for Phillip Sims in games. Does it really come off like London is totally committed to Rocco?
- Last year, UVa upset a Top 10 Georgia Tech team but also had a bye week to prepare for the Yellow Jackets’ offense. What are the biggest concerns for a young defense with a lack of experience and prep time for this offense?

St. Christopher’s (Richmond, VA) linebacker/defensive end Ricky DeBerry Jr. has been offered by the University of Virginia. The 6’2″, 230-pound standout, who had previously been offered by Purdue, reported the Cavaliers’ offer on his Facebook page.
DeBerry Jr. is only a sophomore, so both of these offers are of the verbal kind. He can begin receiving official offers the August prior to his senior season.
A versatile prospect, DeBerry Jr. plays running back and defensive end for the Saints (Find highlights of DeBerry’s freshman season here. He played mostly on the JV before moving to the varsity in the state playoffs.).
DeBerry Jr. was in Scott Stadium for UVa’s season opener against Richmond.

The “Week In Review” will be a weekly feature throughout the 2012 regular season and into the playoffs. It’s a look at how UVa’s recruits performed on the gridiron in the past week. Sadiq Olanrewaju, an offensive tackle out of Salisbury School (Salisbury, CT), won’t take the field in a regular season game until September 22. Most of his future UVa classmates were in action this past week, except for Potomac defensive tackle Donta Wilkins.
Star running back Taquan Mizzell was the star of the week, turning in a 4-touchdown performance in a win. Here is a rundown of how he and the other UVa recruits fared this past week…
- Zach Bradshaw, LB/WR, Damascus (MD)
Bradshaw hauled in two catches for 61 yards and a touchdown as Damascus (2-0) defeated Watkins Mill, 42-0. The 6’3″, 200-pound Bradshaw now has three touchdowns this season. In addition to the 27-yard touchdown reception in week 2, he has a defensive touchdown (interception return) and a special teams score (punt return).
- Malcolm Cook, S/ATH, Fork Union Military Academy (VA)
Penn State-bound quarterback Christian Hackenberg guided Fork Union Prep to an 18-point win over Goochland this past week. Malcolm Cook and the FUMA defense held the Bulldogs to just 10 points on the day. Fork Union improves to 2-1.
- Hipolito Corporan, CB, Westside (Houston, TX)
Westside suffered its first loss of the 2012 season, falling to Fort Bend Clements by a score of 43-35. The team is 1-1.
- Corwin “Turtle” Cutler, QB, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA)
Cutler completed five of 13 passes for 126 yards and a 49-yard touchdown as the Dolphins (3-0) defeated Cox, 28-14.
- Jack English DT/TE, St. Christopher’s (Richmond, VA)
St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes edged out St. Christopher’s, 14-12. The Saints fall to 1-1 on the year.
- Kirk Garner, CB/WR, Andre Levrone Jr., WR, Brendan Marshall, QB, Good Counsel (Olney, MD)
Levrone Jr. remains sidelined while recovering from a broken left tibia suffered in the season opener.
Brendan Marshall went 8-for-14 passing for 197 yards and a touchdown in Good Counsel’s 14-10 win over St. Joseph’s (Montvale, N.J.). Also the Falcons’ (2-1) starting punter, Marshall averaged 38 yards per punt in five tries.
Kirk Garner finished with three catches for 51 yards in the win.
- Tim Harris, CB, Varina (VA)
Harris and the rest of the Blue Devils defense held Dinwiddie to seven points. The offense scored 14, and Varina is 1-0 on the season.
- Brad Henson Jr., OL, Monsignor Donovan (Toms River, N.J.)
Henson’s Monsignor Donovan squad was on the wrong end of a 40-0 decision against St. John Vianney. This was Donovan’s (0-1) first game of the season.
- Keeon Johnson, WR, A.L. Brown (Kannapolis, N.C.)
The Wonders were dealt their first loss of the season last week, falling to Porter Ridge 41-14. Keeon Johnson hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass in a losing effort. The game was tied at 14 at the half, but five turnovers ultimately doomed A.L. Brown (3-1).
- Zack Jones, WR, Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA)
The Tigers got their first win of the season this past week, shutting out Great Bridge 56-0. Zack Jones had touchdown catches of 55 and 76 yards in the win. Oscar Smith evens its record at 1-1.
- Micah Kiser, LB, Gilman (Baltimore, MD)
Gilman can finally put one in the win column after defeating Don Bosco Prep this past weekend. Kiser’s 70-yard interception return in the second quarter evened the game at 6-6, and Maryland-bound quarterback Shane Cockerille’s 1-yard fourth quarter touchdown run put the Greyhounds on top for good, 13-6. Gilman is 1-2 on the year.
- Jack McDonald, OL, Boston College High (Boston, MA)
Brockton defeated BC High, 21-0, in the season opener for both squads. It was a scoreless game at the half, but Brockton reeled off 21 straight including 14 in the fourth.
- Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell, RB, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA)
Thanks in large part to Mizzell, Bayside rebounded from a big loss to Salem with a 27-14 win over Green Run. The star tailback accounted for all four of Bayside’s (2-1) touchdowns, finishing with two rushing touchdowns, a 35-yard touchdown catch and a 98-yard kick-off return. Mizzell had 25 carries for 179 yards on the day.
- LaChaston Smith, LB, South Iredell (Statesville, N.C.)
Smith hopes to be able to return just after midseason after suffering a broken fibula in South Iredell’s season opener.
- Donta Wilkins, DT/OL, Potomac (Dumfries, VA)
Potomac (1-1) had a bye week. Wilkins used the weekend off to take in his future team’s 17-16 win over Penn State. His current team will return to action this Friday against Battlefield.
- Chris Nelson, DT, Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL), Class of 2014 recruit
The UVa-bound junior had 12 tackles in a 30-7 loss to Berkeley Prep this past week. VCA falls to 0-2 on the season.

In a tweet in the early morning hours this past Saturday, 5-star power forward/center Austin Nichols wrote the following about the University of Virginia:
“UVA is great! Great atmosphere! The coaches are also great!”
The 6’9″, 210-pound Briarcrest Christian (Eads, TN) senior returned home today. According to another tweet, he and his family will host Vanderbilt coaches this evening on an in-home visit. Nichols has scheduled an official to Vanderbilt for next weekend, and he will go to Duke for an official visit the weekend of October 6-8. He is also expected to take officials to Auburn and Tennessee. Hometown Memphis rounds out the talented recruit’s final six.
TheSabre plans to have much more on Nichols’ trip to Charlottesville soon.
