Week In Review: Bradshaw Sparks Damascus
September 3rd, 2012 by Chris HorneThe “Week In Review” will be a weekly feature throughout the 2012 regular season and into the playoffs. It’s a look at how UVa’s recruits performed on the gridiron in the past week. Tim Harris (CB), Brad Henson Jr. (OL), Jack McDonald (OL) and Sadiq Olanrewaju (OL) have yet to play a regular season game. All but Olanrewaju will see action this week.
Without further ado, let’s get to last week’s action…
- Zach Bradshaw, LB/WR, Damascus (MD)
The 6’3″, 200-pound Bradshaw had two touchdowns as Damascus toppled Clarksburg, 41-6, in its season opener. Bradshaw opened the scoring with a 55-yard punt return for a score, and he added an 82-yard interception return for a touchdown later in the first quarter.
- Malcolm Cook, S/ATH, Fork Union Military Academy (VA)
Last week’s contest against Georgetown Prep was a good one for Cook and his Fork Union teammates. The Virginia-bound defensive back returned two interceptions for touchdowns, helping FUMA to a 32-24 win over Georgetown Prep. Fork Union evens its record at 1-1.
- Hipolito Corporan, CB, Westside (Houston, TX)
While the Westside offense tallied 43 points, Corporan and the Westside defense blanked Reagan in a season opening victory.
- Corwin “Turtle” Cutler, QB, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA)
Cutler guided Ocean Lakes to its second consecutive blowout win to start the 2012 season. Last week, the Dolphins shutout Princess Anne by a score of 51-0. Cutler had three touchdown passes (20, 40, 24) in the win.
- Jack English DT/TE, St. Christopher’s (Richmond, VA)
The Saints defeated Trinity Episcopal, 21-6, in their 2012 season opener. English played only the first three quarters before being forced to sit due to cramps.
- Kirk Garner, CB/WR, Andre Levrone Jr., WR, Brendan Marshall, QB, Good Counsel (Olney, MD)
Playing without an injured Levrone Jr., Good Counsel squeaked out a 20-19 overtime win over Maryland rival Gilman. Garner had 5 catches for 95 yards, while Marshall threw for 232 yards and a touchdown. I’ll have a full recap of this game, along with video highlights and interviews, up on the EDGE.
- Keeon Johnson, WR, A.L. Brown (Kannapolis, N.C.)
A.L. Brown is 3-0 after last week’s 38-21 win over Rocky River.
- Zack Jones, WR, Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA)
Oscar Smith (0-1) was idle last week. The Tigers will take the field this Friday night against Great Bridge.
- Micah Kiser, LB, Gilman (Baltimore, MD)
As mentioned above, Gilman lost a tough battle to Good Counsel, 20-19. It doesn’t get any easier for the Greyhounds (0-2), who next face New Jersey prep powerhouse Don Bosco Prep.
- Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell, RB, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA)
Salem got the best of Bayside last week, winning 37-7 in a Beach District showdown. The usually high-powered Marlins offense was limited to less than 200 total yards in the defeat. Bayside falls to 1-1 on the year.
- LaChaston Smith, LB, South Iredell (Statesville, N.C.)
Smith hopes to be able to return just after midseason after suffering a broken fibula in South Iredell’s season opener.
- Donta Wilkins, DT/OL, Potomac (Dumfries, VA)
Potomac fell short against North Stafford, 13-8. The loss evens Potomac’s record at 1-1.
- Chris Nelson, DT, Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL), Class of 2014 recruit
VCA fell to Admiral Farragut in its season opener, 18-14. Nelson, who plays a variety of positions for the team, had a 1-yard touchdown plunge in the second quarter.
