Mizzell, Kiser Star In Wins
September 10th, 2012 by Chris HorneThe “Week In Review” will be a weekly feature throughout the 2012 regular season and into the playoffs. It’s a look at how UVa’s recruits performed on the gridiron in the past week. Sadiq Olanrewaju, an offensive tackle out of Salisbury School (Salisbury, CT), won’t take the field in a regular season game until September 22. Most of his future UVa classmates were in action this past week, except for Potomac defensive tackle Donta Wilkins.
Star running back Taquan Mizzell was the star of the week, turning in a 4-touchdown performance in a win. Here is a rundown of how he and the other UVa recruits fared this past week…
- Zach Bradshaw, LB/WR, Damascus (MD)
Bradshaw hauled in two catches for 61 yards and a touchdown as Damascus (2-0) defeated Watkins Mill, 42-0. The 6’3″, 200-pound Bradshaw now has three touchdowns this season. In addition to the 27-yard touchdown reception in week 2, he has a defensive touchdown (interception return) and a special teams score (punt return).
- Malcolm Cook, S/ATH, Fork Union Military Academy (VA)
Penn State-bound quarterback Christian Hackenberg guided Fork Union Prep to an 18-point win over Goochland this past week. Malcolm Cook and the FUMA defense held the Bulldogs to just 10 points on the day. Fork Union improves to 2-1.
- Hipolito Corporan, CB, Westside (Houston, TX)
Westside suffered its first loss of the 2012 season, falling to Fort Bend Clements by a score of 43-35. The team is 1-1.
- Corwin “Turtle” Cutler, QB, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA)
Cutler completed five of 13 passes for 126 yards and a 49-yard touchdown as the Dolphins (3-0) defeated Cox, 28-14.
- Jack English DT/TE, St. Christopher’s (Richmond, VA)
St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes edged out St. Christopher’s, 14-12. The Saints fall to 1-1 on the year.
- Kirk Garner, CB/WR, Andre Levrone Jr., WR, Brendan Marshall, QB, Good Counsel (Olney, MD)
Levrone Jr. remains sidelined while recovering from a broken left tibia suffered in the season opener.
Brendan Marshall went 8-for-14 passing for 197 yards and a touchdown in Good Counsel’s 14-10 win over St. Joseph’s (Montvale, N.J.). Also the Falcons’ (2-1) starting punter, Marshall averaged 38 yards per punt in five tries.
Kirk Garner finished with three catches for 51 yards in the win.
- Tim Harris, CB, Varina (VA)
Harris and the rest of the Blue Devils defense held Dinwiddie to seven points. The offense scored 14, and Varina is 1-0 on the season.
- Brad Henson Jr., OL, Monsignor Donovan (Toms River, N.J.)
Henson’s Monsignor Donovan squad was on the wrong end of a 40-0 decision against St. John Vianney. This was Donovan’s (0-1) first game of the season.
- Keeon Johnson, WR, A.L. Brown (Kannapolis, N.C.)
The Wonders were dealt their first loss of the season last week, falling to Porter Ridge 41-14. Keeon Johnson hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass in a losing effort. The game was tied at 14 at the half, but five turnovers ultimately doomed A.L. Brown (3-1).
- Zack Jones, WR, Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA)
The Tigers got their first win of the season this past week, shutting out Great Bridge 56-0. Zack Jones had touchdown catches of 55 and 76 yards in the win. Oscar Smith evens its record at 1-1.
- Micah Kiser, LB, Gilman (Baltimore, MD)
Gilman can finally put one in the win column after defeating Don Bosco Prep this past weekend. Kiser’s 70-yard interception return in the second quarter evened the game at 6-6, and Maryland-bound quarterback Shane Cockerille’s 1-yard fourth quarter touchdown run put the Greyhounds on top for good, 13-6. Gilman is 1-2 on the year.
- Jack McDonald, OL, Boston College High (Boston, MA)
Brockton defeated BC High, 21-0, in the season opener for both squads. It was a scoreless game at the half, but Brockton reeled off 21 straight including 14 in the fourth.
- Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell, RB, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA)
Thanks in large part to Mizzell, Bayside rebounded from a big loss to Salem with a 27-14 win over Green Run. The star tailback accounted for all four of Bayside’s (2-1) touchdowns, finishing with two rushing touchdowns, a 35-yard touchdown catch and a 98-yard kick-off return. Mizzell had 25 carries for 179 yards on the day.
- LaChaston Smith, LB, South Iredell (Statesville, N.C.)
Smith hopes to be able to return just after midseason after suffering a broken fibula in South Iredell’s season opener.
- Donta Wilkins, DT/OL, Potomac (Dumfries, VA)
Potomac (1-1) had a bye week. Wilkins used the weekend off to take in his future team’s 17-16 win over Penn State. His current team will return to action this Friday against Battlefield.
- Chris Nelson, DT, Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL), Class of 2014 recruit
The UVa-bound junior had 12 tackles in a 30-7 loss to Berkeley Prep this past week. VCA falls to 0-2 on the season.
