Mizzell’s 5 TDs Help Bayside Rebound

September 24th, 2012 by Chris Horne

The “Week In Review” will be a weekly feature throughout the 2012 regular season and into the playoffs.  It’s a look at how UVa’s recruits performed on the gridiron in the past week.  With the exceptions of cornerback Tim Harris and linebacker Micah Kiser, every one of UVa’s recruits (class of 2013 as well as Chris Nelson, a class of 2014 recruit) were victorious this past week.

- Zach Bradshaw, LB/WR, Damascus (MD)

Damascus recorded shutout no. 2 of the 2012 season, this time blanking Einstein 35-0.  The Hornets (4-0) have allowed only 14 points all year.

- Malcolm Cook, S/ATH, Fork Union Military Academy (VA)

Fork Union defeated defending state champ Christchurch, 21-7, to move to 4-1 this season.

- Hipolito Corporan, CB, Westside (Houston, TX)

Westside has evened its record at 2-2 after beating Kempner, 48-21, last Friday night.

- Corwin “Turtle” Cutler, QB, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA)

Ocean Lakes scored its fifth victory in as many games, this time defeating First Colonial 50-14.  Cutler completed 15 of 23 passes for 250 yards and three scores.  He threw no interceptions.  This performance comes off a previous week’s output in which he completed 10 of 11 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns.

- Jack English DT/TE, St. Christopher’s (Richmond, VA)

St. Christopher’s rolled to a 40-14 win over Norfolk Academy and is now 3-1 on the year.

- Kirk Garner, CB/WR, Andre Levrone Jr., WR, Brendan Marshall, QB, Good Counsel (Olney, MD)

Fueled by 38 first-half points, Good Counsel rolled to a 45-24 win over Gonzaga this past Saturday.  After Gonzaga tied the game at 7-7, Garner returned the ensuing kick-off 81 yards for a touchdown.  The Falcons would score 31 straight points before a Gonzaga field goal made for a 38-10 halftime score.

Marshall had a quiet night, completing only 4-of-8 passes for 23 yards and an interception.  He added 25 yards rushing on three carries.  Clemson-bound running back/linebacker Dorian O’Daniel was the story, as he rushed 24 times for 336 yards and four scores.

Garner added one catch for seven yards.

Levrone Jr. remains sidelined while recovering from a broken left tibia suffered in the season opener.

- Tim Harris, CB, Varina (VA)

Varina went toe-to-toe with fellow Central Region power Hermitage before losing in overtime, 20-17.  Harris, who primarily plays defense, had three receptions for 19 yards in a losing effort.  The Blue Devils fall to 2-1.

- Brad Henson Jr., OL, Monsignor Donovan (Toms River, N.J.)

Monsignor Donovan held on to beat Barnegat, 24-21.  Henson and the rest of the offensive line paved the way for three long touchdown runs (47, 52, 72) that gave Donovan (2-1) a 21-7 halftime lead.

- Keeon Johnson, WR, A.L. Brown (Kannapolis, N.C.)

Johnson missed his second straight game with a toe injury, but Brown still handled Central Cabarrus in a 39-7 win.  Brown is 2-0 in its conference, 5-1 overall.

- Zack Jones, WR, Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA)

Jones had two receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown in Oscar Smith’s 49-0 win over Nansemond River.  The Tigers are now 3-1 this season.  Jones, whose touchdown catch covered 53 yards, now has four scores on the season.

- Micah Kiser, LB, Gilman (Baltimore, MD)

Gilman (2-2) was idle.  The Greyhounds take to the field again this Saturday, against Mount St. Joseph.

- Jack McDonald, OL, Boston College High (Boston, MA)

BC High put one in the win column, defeating Dartmouth 31-0.  The Eagles are 1-2.

- Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell, RB, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA)

An up-and-down season for Bayside was up again this past week, when the Marlins soundly defeated Kempsville by a score of 53-6.  Mizzell came through big, rushing 15 times for 109 yards and four touchdowns.  He added an 83-yard punt return for another score.

Bayside improves to 3-2 on the season.  Mizzell has excelled in all three wins, but the opposition has kept him in check in both losses.

- Sadiq Olanrewaju, OL, Salisbury School (CT)

Salisbury won its 2012 season opener, defeating Hotchkiss 10-6.

- LaChaston Smith, LB, South Iredell (Statesville, N.C.)

Smith hopes to be able to return soon after suffering a broken fibula in South Iredell’s season opener.  His team defeated Bunker Hill, 51-7, this past week to move to 5-1.

- Donta Wilkins, DT/OL, Potomac (Dumfries, VA)

Potomac ended its 2-game losing skid with a 32-0 defeat of Freedom-Woodbridge.  Wilkins and company are 2-2 in 2012.

- Chris Nelson, DT, Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL), Class of 2014 recruit

VCA has finally put one in the victory column, defeating Mount Dora Bible by a score of 32-18.  The Storm is now 1-3 on the year.
