Tunji considering leaving too?

August 7th, 2008 by Mahini

Tunji SoroyeThe good news: Tunji got cleared for a medical redshirt and ostensibly could have a scholarship open for him now that Will Harris is leaving the program. The odd news: Soroye is leaning toward transferring anyway? The kicker is the rumor that he’s simply not feeling warm fuzzies from the coaching staff. Wouldn’t it be a good thing to have an experienced senior center so that our inexperienced freshman centers can have some growing space? Don’t we want Tunji to mentor the new guys? To bring some needed defensive presence to a young team? To at least suck up some fouls?

Plus, this is a use or lose situation, because we’re talking about a scholie for next year that won’t be used for any new players. The only thing I can think of here (if this rumor is true) is that Dave Leitao really wants to reward Calvin Baker at the expense of Tunji’s return. And, while that may be an honorable thing to do, it doesn’t seem like the most optimum use of this scholarship.

If Leitao does drive Tunji away, it wouldn’t make much sense to me. In fact, it makes so little sense that I’m going to call BS on this one for now.
